It’s been over two years now since my husband and I purchased Resurrection Sanctuary. Almost immediately, a dream began to form in my heart and mind:

I wanted to start a “contending house of prayer”, which I hoped to be characterized by:

• commitment to advancing the Kingdom of God through intercession and worship
• praying for revival and transformation
• seeking the leading of the Holy Spirit
• prayers based on and inspired by Scripture

I had high and lofty hopes that God would send me musicians and other intercessors, and that together we would build a unique house of prayer in Nipomo, and that our prayers would bring glory to God and have an significant impact for the Kingdom of God. I tend to be a quite the dreamer!

For those first few months, when I was full of exciting plans, it seems that almost everyone had the same word for me: “Despise not the day of small beginnings.” I took it to mean that I needed to start small and then suddenly it would be as if the floodgates of Heaven would open, and musicians and intercessors would rain down on Resurrection Sanctuary.

God had other plans. A musician or two came and went. So did a few intercessors. Sometimes our “Open for Prayer” sign is like a magnet, and there have been weeks where several people with prayer needs came in each day. Those were and are exciting times!

The many hours I have spent alone have, at times, been exciting in their own way. I have been, and still am, in the school of prayer — and it is not just my prayers that are being changed. It is my very life.

In addition, some of the practical considerations and circumstances of my life have been changing as well, and the prayer schedule has had to reflect that.

So that brings me to now. There is a song that I have sung at various prayer gatherings and also in the solitude of Resurrection Sanctuary. It is a prayer, really: “Make me a house of prayer.” I believe that is what God wants to do with each one of us. Why He has given me a church to pray in, when others struggle to find the time and place to pray — well, I’m still trying to figure that out.

In the meantime, whenever possible, I start my weekdays (except for Tuesdays) at Resurrection Sanctuary. I have been rediscovering the beauty of prayer books, and of some of the beautiful, time-tested prayer traditions that help connect and unite me with the global Church throughout time and history. I have been also rediscovering the prayers of the Bible. At the same time, I have been enjoying a fresher, deeper sense of spontaneity in my private prayer and worship.

On every Friday that I’m available to do so, I spend my time in prayer, Bible reading, worship, praise, and meditation at Resurrection Sanctuary, from 7:00am until 2:00pm. Come join me as God builds His house of prayer in each one of us and in Resurrection Sanctuary.
